This hike through the Irish hills is a ritual that brings people out into the beauty of the area, and helps to create a sense of occasion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The most basic answer is that for first-time attendees it is likely a possession ritual<\/strong>, and for returnees, a grooming ritual<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students will often name the ritual type, and then stop. The trick is to get them to recall the entire Movement of Meaning model and then coach\/coax them to fill out all of the boxes:<\/p>\n\n\n

What is the culturally constituted meaning? According to the description that students are given, the music is about “poetic stories – often about life, love, loss, sailing, and the beauty of the countryside. Irish culture holds a strong value for poetry”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This meaning enters the consumer good (in this case the music and\/or festival attendance). With some students, it is probably wise to note that this transfer happens and move quickly on. For students with a strong intellectual bent, though, one can enter into a debate about the exact mechanism by which this movement happens. The best option the model lists is probably through the fashion system, most likely via “non-elite sources”. A better answer, though, might be that the music creates this meaning directly with its lyrics, and that McCracken simply hadn’t considered this possibility in his model#up?<\/p>\n\n\n

#down. This is a potential teachable moment for the old G.E.P. Box dictum that: \"all models are wrong, but some are useful\". Should we alter the model to accomodate this extra possiblity, or does the model start getting too clogged to be useful if we keep tagging extra bits on like this? That is a debate you can have, if so inclined<\/pre>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n
The more straightforward point is that the possession\/grooming ritual of the hike and the concert help the festival attendees to cement this meaning into their working-self (and possibly other more lasting selves too – actual or ideal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Part 2:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n
Put students into groups, let them try to be creative, coach them, and perhaps have some or all of them share their best ideas with the whole class.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There isn’t any set right or wrong answer here, but rather a key still we are trying to teach: Get out of your own head, with your own cultural assumptions about what a good message would look like, and start putting yourself into someone else’s. To the extent that students just throw out generic promotional strategies then they are not learning this lesson, and the goal is to coach\/coax them towards it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s worth taking a skim of the linked Wikipedia page on punk sub-culture (and\/or any better sources you might have), and then trying to help students be explicit about linking their ideas to what they know \/ have learned about punk subcultures.
